Hello again baseball fans! As August starts winding down, ball clubs know that the only way to keep them in the race is to win. While scoreboard watching is fun, it’s not exactly going to do any good without throwing some W’s on the board. Here are the wraps of the games I kept my eye on this weekend!
This weekend was built around some key matchups that would really effect the AL wild card standings. The series that stood out the most to me was the Rays & Angels down in Anaheim. The halos have been on some landslide lately, being unable to really shut the door on a win.
- Thursday: The series started on with bang on the Rays side, who scored seven behind David Price who dominated his way to his 16 win. (7-0 Rays)
- Friday: You know a team is truly hitting a rough patch when your then 15-2 ace gives up 9 runs in three innings. (12-3 Rays)
- Saturday: Things were looking up for the Angels when they managed to put 8 runs in 3 innings. Unfortunately for the Halos, the Rays scored some runs, tied the game, and Carlos Pena rocketed the Rays to a lead with a pinch hit two-run homer. (10-8 Rays)
- Four game sweep, poor Halos. (8-3 Rays)
The Angels are now 62-55, 5 GB of the Rangers, 6-4 in their last ten, and 4.5 out of the WC. The Rays however have sole control of the top WC spot (+1), are 5 GB of the Yankees, and are smokin’ hot right now.
With the loss of Melky Cabrera, I thought it’d be a little intriguing to keep a closer eye on the SF Giants series down in San Diego. They took two out of three, and managed to put on a somewhat offensive show that left some people mumbling “MELKY WHO?!” and “BUSTER FOR MVP”. Nothing against the Giants, but of course they didn’t feel the offensive loss of Melky this weekend, they were playing the Padres! I don’t think they can justify the “we’re A-OK without Melky” nonsense until the end of this seven game stretch. A
Astros fired their coaching staff on Saturday.
A’s swept the Indian at home during the Streak-end! If that confused anyone at all, the A’s spent the weekend celebrating the 20 win streak of 2002. Great ceremony on Saturday, great crowds. The A’s have to take advantage of teams that aren’t so hot, especially this home stand, because they’re set for a huge series in Florida next weekend.
Predictions for the Week:
I think that KC is going to take the series from Tampa, the A’s bats are going to heat up, the Dodgers are going to take the series from the Giants, & there’s going to be a tough series between the Nats and Braves.
All for now!
